Catechesis of the Good Shepherd
“The prepared environment is called the ‘atrium’… it is a place of spiritual retreat in which work easily becomes prayer… a place of worship where children and adults celebrate the Word together.”
– Sofia Cavalletti, “Characteristics of the Good Shepherd Catechesis”
WHAT IS IT?
Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a Montessori based faith formation founded on two pillars: Sacred Scripture and Sacred Liturgy. Through the use of Scripture and materials, which we call “work”, children are invited to enter into a deeper relationship with God.
WHERE IS IT?
CGS sessions take place with extensively trained catechists, in a dedicated prepared space for children called the Atrium. The atrium is a special place of work and prayer, filled with kids-sized furniture and hands on models of people, places, and items found in scripture and the liturgy. These manipulatives are introduced to the children throughout the year. Each week, the children choose “work” to continue their meditation about particular scripture texts or signs from the liturgy. Working with these materials, allows the child to enter more deeply into meditation, nurturing their relationship with the Good Shepherd.
