A Message to the Parish Community
Our hearts are heavy as we join with the rest of the province in mourning the lives lost in the tragedy in Tumbler Ridge on February 10th. In the face of such senseless violence, we are often left with a profound sense of sorrow and questions that have no easy answers.
As a community of faith, we are called to respond not with fear, but with the power of prayer and the strength of solidarity. This is a time for us to lean into our faith, to support one another, and to be a source of light for those who feel overwhelmed by the darkness of these events.
In the days ahead, let us be especially attentive to our neighbours and those among us who are struggling. May we find strength in the promise of the Resurrection and the peace of Christ that surpasses all understanding.
In this month of February, we entrust the victims and their families to the intercession of Our Lady of Lourdes, asking for her mantle of healing and comfort to wrap around all those who are grieving.
Let us pray for the souls of those who lost their lives, for healing for the injured, and for consolation for their families and friends. Our parish will be lowering its flag to half-mast for the next seven days.
Support is available for anyone affected by trauma. The Hope for Wellness Helpline provides 24-hour crisis support across Canada at 1-855-242-3310 or through online chat.
A Prayer for Peace and Healing
Lord God, We bring to You the brokenhearted people of Tumbler Ridge. For those whose lives were taken, grant them the fullness of Your peace. For the families enduring the unimaginable, be their strength and their refuge. For the injured and the frightened, grant them healing and a sense of safety.
Guide us to be instruments of Your peace in our own homes and neighbourhoods. Help us to trust in Your mercy even when we do not understand.
Amen.
Our parish relies on your generosity. Your donations each year directly impact our ability to minister to those in need, to provide special programs such as Alpha and CGS, to offer small group faith studies, to maintain our buildings, and to grow our parish school.

This Sunday’s second collection supports our retired priests who have dedicated their entire life to the Church. Generous support from the community ensures a comfortable living environment, quality medical care, and other essential services for our retired priests. Parishioners can make their tax-deductible donation to St. Josephโs Society in-person at our parish office or online by selecting the button below:

Reflection
Lent begins this Wednesday, February 18, with a day of fasting and prayer. As we approach the altar to receive ashes, we are invited once again to press the pause button on the noise of the world and enter the desert of our own hearts.
This year, accompanied by Sister Miriam James Heidlandโs Restore series, we are invited to look at our Lenten disciplines through the lens of healing. More than just a season of “giving things up,” Lent is an encounter with the heart of Jesus, who desires to make us whole. Whether we find ourselves eager for the journey or feeling a bit weary, let us use these forty days to allow prayer to heal our relationship with God, fasting to heal our relationship with ourselves, and almsgiving to heal our relationship with others. May this be a season not just of sacrifice, but of true restoration and peace.
God, heavenly Father, look upon me and hear my prayer during this holy Season of Lent. By the disciplines of this season, help me to find healing and to be restored in spirit. Without You I can do nothing. By Your Spirit, lead me into the depths of my heart to know Your will and be made whole.
Prepare yourself for Lent

Fill my heart with Your love and keep me faithful to the Gospel of Christ.

Give me new life by Your Sacraments, especially the Mass.
Father, our source of life, I reach out with joy to grasp Your hand;
let me walk more readily in Your ways. Guide me in Your gentle mercy, for left to myself I cannot do Your Will.

Archbishop Smith’s Lunar New Year Message
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
As we celebrate Lunar New Year and welcome the Year of the Horse, I extend my warm greetings to all who mark this joyful seasonโespecially to our Asian communities, whose faith, culture, and presence so richly bless the Church here in Vancouver.
In the Christian tradition, the horse appears in Scripture as a sign of strength, endurance, and the long journey of Godโs people through history. While our confidence rests not in human strength but in God alone, such imagery can remind us that the Christian life is a journeyโone that calls for perseverance, courage, and faithful trust in Godโs plan.
Lunar New Year offers a time for renewal, inviting us to pause, to give thanks, to seek reconciliation where relationships have been strained, and to turn our hearts again toward God as we look ahead. It also encourages reflection on the year that has passed and calls us to step forward with renewed purpose. As disciples of Christ, we are called to walk this path together, attentive to one another and responsive to the needs of our neighbours and the world.
I pray that this Lunar New Year may be a time of peace and blessing for you and your families. May God guide our steps in the months ahead and strengthen us to journey forward together in faith.
With prayers for a blessed and joyful Lunar New Year,
โ โฏRichard W. Smith
